The continuous chipping sound of metal against concrete coming from one of the classrooms of Kiambaa Primary School, Upper Tana, greeted the KenGen Foundation team while on their first monitoring visit to assess the progress of the school’s renovation works on 6 Dec 2016.

Local youth busy working on one of Kiambaa Primary School’s classrooms. The project is designed to benefit the community through the contractual employment of women and youth at Upper Tana.

Led by the Foundation’s Senior Programs Officer Anthony Igecha, KenGen;s Civil Engineer Jamal Swabu, and KenGen’s Environmentalist Obed Kariuki, the team toured the institution, and later held a brief meeting with the contractor and the Project Implementation Committee to iron out the finer details of the project which is funded by the World Bank Community Development Carbon Fund.

“It is imperative that the contractor works with KenGen’s civil engineer and the Project Implementation Committee to ensure the timely implementation of the project.

“Of equal importance, the contractor must ensure that the bulk of the construction work is outsourced to the local youth and women so as to comply with the CDCF project guidelines”, Mr. Igecha said adding “It also the contractor’s duty to vet the casual workers for discipline, and also provide the necessary safety measures as required by law”.
