The focus on climate action has been necessitated by the adverse impact of climate change in socio-economic development in Kenya. This has resulted in poor living conditions in some areas, occurrence of floods, drought, unregulated release of industrial wastes and increased burden in health.

National and County Governments have a responsibility in ensuring that the Country this issues are dealt with and that the population is food secure, there is use of natural resources sustainably, provision of affordable and quality healthcare, job opportunities are created and sustainable waste management employed both by government and private sector.

KenGen’s Western Region Givers Donate Water Tanks to Sondu Community https://www.kengenfoundation.co.ke/kengens-western-region-givers-donate-water-tanks-to-sondu-community/ Thu, 24 Dec 2020 12:10:41 +0000 https://www.kengenfoundation.co.ke/?p=5517

About 70 households from Nyakach and Homabay counties were the beneficiaries of water tanks donated by the KenGen Employee Giver Initiative as part of KenGen Foundation’s Corporate Social Investment from 22 – 24 December 2020.

KenGen’s Western Region Manager Eng. Alfred Abiero kicked off the exercise by handing over the timely Christmas gifts to the first five households. The 1,000-liter tanks will go a long way in assisting the families with water storage and minimizing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Speaking during the exercise, Eng. Abiero, a passionate Giver himself, thanked the Givers and encouraged them to make the activity an annual event. “I want to appreciate this exercise that will really improve the lives of the community especially this time of the year. I urge you to make this an annual event”, said Abiero calling upon the initiative members to continue in charitable activities in their own capacity.

The donation is a part of the KenGen PLC’s objective in addressing water and sanitation challenges faced by communities neighboring its power stations. KenGen Foundation complements the company’s efforts in contributing to the general health and welfare of targeted communities through the distribution of water tanks and water harvesting equipment.

While receiving the tanks, the beneficiaries appreciated the donations and the positive impacts anticipated especially during the dry season.  According to the residents, the donation came at a time when community needed them the most.

The devastating effects of the corona virus pandemic cannot be understated. Access to clean water is one of the most effective prevention measures curbing the spread and lowering the rates of infection. While washing hands with soap and keeping a safe physical distance are some of the most practical ways to combat the spread of COVID-19, these are not so simple tasks to do for Kenya’s most vulnerable population.

The KenGen Employee Giver Initiative is a platform for KenGen PLC staff to participate and contribute in the company’s corporate social responsibility activities.

The water tanks donation activity is part of the global #GivingTuesday movement that encourages corporates and individuals to participate in charitable activities during the festive season.

The Schools Green Initiative Challenge impressed participants attending a workshop on dry-land agroforestry organized by the Foundation’s project partner Better Globe Forestry at the University of Nairobi – Kabete campus on 16 August.

The event was graced by the Ambassador of Belgium to Kenya His Excellency Mr. Nicolas Nihon, the Managing Director of Better Globe Forestry Mr. Jean-Paul Deprins, the KenGen Foundation Manaaging Trustee Mr. Anthony Igecha and representatives from the University of Ghent (Belgium), University of Nairobi, Kenya Forestry Research Institute, International Center for Research in Agroforestry/ World Agroforestry Centre, and Kenya Forest Service among others.

READ MORE: Schools Tree Planting Awards Come of Age.

The workshop was convened to discuss the challenges, benefits and way forward of cultivating Melia volkensii, the tree species used in the Schools Green Initiative Challenge (GIC), for farmers living in semi-arid regions.

In his presentation, the Foundation’s Managing Trustee Officer Anthony Igecha exhibited the schools tree growing model of the GIC project, highlighting the project’s contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases through carbon sequestration, the control soil erosion by increasing topsoil infiltration and reducing runoff, and ultimately grooming the next generation of environmental ambassadors.

“It was honor to get recognition from our efforts after starting the pilot project at the semi-arid counties of Embu and Machakos with 81 schools in 2013”, said Mr. Igecha. “Currently, we have 200 schools involved in phase IV and V of the afforestation competition. We will be adding 100 more in 2020 so as to be able to achieve our ultimate objective of greening more than 460 acres with Melia volkensii, locally known as Mukau, and other dry-land tree species at schools within the two counties, including Kitui”.

Mukau, including Muveshi (S. Siamea) and Terminalia brownie, are the choice trees for the Schools Green Initiative Challenge, a unique project implemented by KenGen Foundation in partnership with Better Globe Forestry and Bamburi Cement Ltd. The project’s main objective is the greening of over 460 acres in the semi-arid counties of Embu, Kitui and Machakos as a way of mitigating climate change and providing wood fuel and alternative income opportunities for the local communities.

Melia Volkensii (Mukau) is a tree species that is indigenous to East Africa.  In Kenya, the species grows naturally in Mbeere, Tharaka, Kitui, Mutomo, Mwingi, Makueni and Taita Taveta counties. The tree can grow to heights of up to 15m high and a diameter of 50cm over a period of 20 years. Mukau is drought resistant and can grow with an annual average rainfall of 400-1000mm. As a hardwood, it produces good quality timber, which makes it quite marketable and is also useful as fodder, bee keeping, and bio-pesticide manufacturing.

So far over 150,000 tree seedlings have been planted through the GIC, with 40,000 more to be distributed to the new schools next year.

The KenGen Foundation’s desk was a beehive of activities as fifteen new ‘Givers’ subscribed to the KenGen Employee Giver Initiative during this year’s G2G Innovation seminar held at Enashipai Resort and Spa from 3-7 July.

Participants and delegates stopped by to inquire, and find out more about how they could get involved in the Company’s Corporate Investment activities through the Employee Giver Initiative which centres its activities on the Foundation’s three key pillars of sustainability namely Environment, Education, and Water & Sanitation.

Under the seminar’s theme of “Partnerships for Innovation”, the Foundation was delighted to welcome the new Givers who will join the more than 800 subscribers in supporting the Company’s Education Scholarships and Mentorship program, reforestation projects, and improving access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for communities living around KenGen’s power stations.

KenGen Foundation’s Cathy Kwena with a new Giver Michael Ogonji, Senior Engineer Capital Planning

“I believe that this is a very good initiative for a worthy cause. Helping the needy is a basic instinct to humanity and should be encouraged. The environment gives us resources free, but all it also requires us to manage it sustainably. Let us all join hands and embrace the true spirit of humanity”, said Michael Ogonji, Senior Engineer Capital Planning.

The KenGen Employee Giver Initiative is part of KenGen’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen while at the same time adding value to the livelihoods of neighbouring communities.

The initiative is in line with this year’s G2G main objective, which is to encourage employees to embrace and embed innovation in the Company’s operations by coming up with new ideas relating to new business models, revenue generation and cost cutting measures.

KenGen Givers voluntarily contribute and participate in the company’s CSI activities. They also use their time and skills in brainstorming and providing solutions to day-to-day challenges facing the marginalized communities.

The Initiative is also an important channel for diversifying funding for the Company’s CSI projects. It also aims at increasing KenGen employees’ attitudes and feelings of ownership and affiliation to the company’s projects, specifically community ones.

Givers also have a great opportunity to develop their leadership and project management skills, meet and mingle with community members, as well as staff from other stations during the CSI activities.

“It just feels good to give back to the community”, said Faith Katua, Senior IT Auditor and the latest addition to the Giver family.

The KenGen Employee Giver Initiative has welcomed 60 new subscribers from the Central Office during the recruitment drive carried out last week. And in a befitting appreciation, the Foundation hosted the old and new members to a colourful cocktail held at the 11th floor of KenGen Pension Plaza 2 on April 12

This brings the number of Givers at the Cental Office to 260, the highest company-wide in proportion to the number of staff per area.

Speaking on behalf of the Givers during the cocktail, KenGen’s Technical Assurance & Quality, Manager Henry Ithiami, a passionate Giver in his own right thanked the Foundation for finding time to appreciate the Givers. “Through the multiplier effect of the Giver Initiative, we are grateful for the opportunities given through the Foundation to serve a bigger purpose. We appreciate the chance of being able to change livelihoods through voluntary giving”, he said.

In a message read by the Foundation’s Managing Trustee Mike Njeru, the MD and CEO Eng. Albert Mugo thanked all the givers as he wrote; “The Foundation appreciates the willing giving and thats why I am a Giver myself”, he said.

The Supply Chain Department received special accolades for registering the highest numbers within the two days of the recruitment exercise, with the Transport Department being recognised as having the most dedicated Givers with more than 80per cent subscribers.

The Chief Guest at the event, the Human Resource and Administration Director Mr. Abraham Serem gave a moving speech on the power of giving which can help alleviate the world’s suffering. “We give not because we have but because we are willing to do so. It is not what someone has but the willingness of his heart that leads to his giving”, he said adding that the Company encourages all employees to engage in philanthropic activities.

Mr. Serem said he was a witness to the great work the Foundation was doing having seen the improvement of Kiambaa Primary School in Upper Tana carried out the Foundation.

The Managing Trustee noted that the contributions from Givers had managed to raise over Ksh. 4 million which will go a long way in expanding projects under the Foundation’s three main pillars namely Education, Environment, Water & Sanitation. “Currently, we have 8 students benefitting through scholarships funded by the initiative”, he added.

Mr. Njeru encouraged the Givers to recruit their friends and colleagues who are not yet subscribed. Central Office Givers have been actively involved in the company’s Corporate Social Investment activities through the Foundation and its partners. Last year, the Nairobi Givers managed to plant over 1,000 trees at Nairobi National Park’s buffer zone as part of KenGen’s corporate mandate in environmental conservation. A section of the subscribers have committed themselves to the Education Program as mentors.

Elaine Kirui, Purchasing Officer and Patrick Olum from Transport were nominated as Nairobi champions charged with mobilizing and coordinating the Givers and their activities.

The recruitment and appreciation exercises continue in other areas over the next month.

The Thika East community together with the area leaders attended a briefing session on the proposed conversion of the historic Ndula Power to a museum held at Kolping Vocational Training Centre, Kilimambogo on April 11. The briefing was made by a team from KenGen, KenGen Foundation and the National Museums of Kenya.

The three parties recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the development of the Museum.

The stakeholders’ meeting was the first step towards involving the community in the process of developing the proposed Ndula Electric Power Museum as part of their heritage. The meeting was also to allay fears widely held by the community that the station was being sold to other parties.
