The continuous chipping sound of metal against concrete coming from one of the classrooms of Kiambaa Primary School, Upper Tana, greeted the KenGen Foundation team while on their first monitoring visit to assess the progress of the school\u2019s renovation works on 6 Dec 2016.<\/p>\n

Local youth busy working on one of Kiambaa Primary School’s classrooms. The project is designed to benefit the community through the contractual employment of women and youth at Upper Tana.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Led by the Foundation\u2019s Senior Programs Officer Anthony Igecha, KenGen;s Civil Engineer Jamal Swabu, and KenGen\u2019s Environmentalist Obed Kariuki, the team toured the institution, and later held a brief meeting with the contractor and the Project Implementation Committee to iron out the finer details of the project which is funded by the World Bank Community Development Carbon Fund.<\/p>\n

“It is imperative that the contractor works with KenGen\u2019s civil engineer and the Project Implementation Committee to ensure the timely implementation of the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf equal importance, the contractor must ensure that the bulk of the construction work is outsourced to the local youth and women so as to comply with the CDCF project guidelines\u201d, Mr. Igecha said adding \u201cIt also the contractor\u2019s duty to vet the casual workers for discipline, and also provide the necessary safety measures as required by law\u201d.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s renovation, and the construction of the nearby footpath at Mirira are being implemented by KenGen Foundation in conjunction with KenGen\u2019s CDM and Environment Department and KenGen Upper Tana area. It is part of the company\u2019s Corporate Social Investment activity through a $50,000 grant from the World Bank CDCF.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the signing of the contract, the contractor assured the team that the renovations will be completed within the given period and that the necessary requirements will be observed during the construction period.<\/p>\n

Construction progress of the Mirira footpath has already eased access to both sides of the river. <\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

At the Mirira footpath construction site, the team was impressed by the latest developments, which not only included clearing the bush and the initial cementing of the path, 13 local casual laborers were already busy at work.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the chairlady of the Project Implementation Committee Ms. Agnes Kabata was also hands on deck as she worked on clearing stones on one side of the construction site!<\/p>\n

The construction of the footpath \u201cis a triple blessing for the women and youth of this area since they will have easier access to both sides of the river. The youth will also make money for their families this Christmas as the get a chance to gain new skills in construction\u201d, said Ms. Kabata.<\/p>\n

The new footpath is also expected to boost the area\u2019s income generation through the ease of movement between the six villages of Kairo, Gakindu, Matithi, Kayuyu and Kaingojo and the three local markets at Makutano Town.<\/p>\n

Both projects are expected to be completed before end of December, 2016.<\/p>\n
