Thua Primary School, Kitui County is the recent beneficiary of KenGen PLC’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts aimed at improving schools infrastucture following the construction of an 8-acre chail link fence. The fence was built courtesy of the School’s Green Initiative Challenge, the flagship afforestation programme implemented by the KenGen Foundation as an award to the school for emerging position 2 in Phase II of the tree planting competition.

Concerned over the safety of the school that is attended by approximately 300 students, the head teacher of the institution Mr. Makembo expressed his gratitude to the Company and the project partners for the timely construction especially during the dry season.

“Previously, there has been a lot of encroaching into our school as local herders look for pasture to feed their livestock. This posed a security threat not only to our students, but also the school’s assets”, he said.

Additionally, the fence also offers protection from livestock to the school’s GIC woodlot.

Additionally, the construction included the restoration of the gate and the guard house

The Green Initiative Challenge is a program that aims to inspire and enable schools to participate in environmental activities by creating miniature forests and woodlots within their grounds, which can provide a variety of benefits.

KenGen PLC through the KenGen Foundation in partnership with Bamburi Cement and Better Globe Forestry work with schools surrounding the 7 Forks power stations to enhance environmental awareness and encourage students to participate in a and rewarding campaign to improve local environment.
