His academic journey saw him sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations twice to enable him to proceed to Kathiani Boys High School where he passed the national examinations with a B+, and qualify for the KenGen Education Scholarship.

Currently working as a medical representative in a pharmaceutical firm, Martin shares the following:

“To my loving family at KenGen Foundation, asanteni sana. For real, you’re touching lives, enabling our communities. Thank you for your all-round mentorship. I’m morally shaped courtesy of your investment in me. You helped me out of an otherwise pre-determined path of poverty and ignorance. Asanteni saaaana”.

Juliana Njeri

Juliana Njeri Mbugua is currently pursuing a professional course as an accountant (CPA – Section 6). Juliana, from Naivasha Sub-county, graduated from Meru University of Science and Technology with a bachelor of Commerce degree (Finance), having previously completed her secondary education at Maai Mahiu (Girls’) Secondary School with an A-.

Of the scholarship opportunity from KenGen, Juliana “is grateful to KenGen, through the KenGen Foundation, for the abundant support throughout my university education. KenGen has and always will be my ‘heaven-sent’ life changer. Coming at a time when my hopes of joining the university, let alone pursuing my dream course, were clouded with uncertainty, the KenGen Foundation not only ensured I got into a lecture room but also had the smoothest campus life any student would hope for. The Foundation catered for all my fees, upkeep finances and psychological needs that enabled me to fully concentrate on my studies and achieve my goals.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the KenGen Company, the KenGen Foundation fraternity and more specifically to Sir Anthony Igecha and Ms. Dorcas Arama for their priceless care, guidance, and mentorship. May the Almighty reward them all with goodness“.

Exciting Mombasa Tour for GIC Phase II Winners https://www.kengenfoundation.co.ke/exciting-mombasa-tour-for-gic-phase-ii-winners/ Thu, 28 Jun 2018 08:10:09 +0000 https://www.kengenfoundation.co.ke/?p=3667

An evening swim in the Indian Ocean was the crowning moment for thirty students of Thua Primary School, Kitui, during their tour of Mombasa City, June 12 – 15. This was part of their reward for clinching first position in Phase II of the Schools Green Initiative Challenge, which concluded in February 2018.

Two days earlier, the students and their teachers experienced Madaraka Express, the country’s new railway line, when they travelled from Nairobi to Mombasa, having arrived in the city from Kitui by bus.

Thua Primary School students experience Madaraka Express, popularly known as the SGR, during their Mombasa educational trip.

The students, who spent their first day’s morning on a tour of KenGen’s Kipevu Power, managed to beat 119 other schools from the semi-arid counties of Embu, Machakos, and Kitui in a two-year tree planting competition at their 0.5 acre plots for survival rates. Participating schools were given 300 seedlings to compete with their counter parts in nurturing them using different approaches and innovations.

Thua Primary School students tour KenGen’s Kipevu Power Station during their educational tour in Mombasa.

In the afternoon, the students visited Haller Park, Bamburi Cement Ltd.’s rehabilitated quarry, and now a successful model of sustainable environmental management. Learning more about the various plant and animal species, the students also had a chance to explore the Butterfly House and marvel at the ferocity of the resident crocodiles during a feeding session!

GIC II winners, Thua Primary School explore the biodiversity rich Haller Park, a rehabilitated quarry and model of sound environmental management.

Thua Primary School is part of an exciting 10-year afforestation project implemented by the KenGen Foundation in partnership with Better Globe Forestry and Bamburi Cement Ltd. Starting with an initial 81 schools in 2013, the GIC aims to green over 500 acres within schools in Embu, Kitui, and Machakos with Senna siamea, Melia volkensii, Terminalia brownii, paw-paw and yellow passion as way of mitigating climate change and providing multiple benefits.

Currently with more than 400 schools involved, the GIC is in Phase IV and has so far incorporated ‘Green Teachers’ – schools environmental patrons; capacity building sessions for the green teachers and head masters; monitoring and evaluation exercises; and exciting prizes for the top three winning schools.

The ultimate goal of the GIC is to raise the awareness and participation of school children in environmental conservation and ultimately increase the country’s forest cover from the current 7% to the 15% recommended by UNEP.

A tour of Mombasa is incomplete without a visit to Fort Jesus!

The next day, the students visited Fort Jesus, Mombasa’s iconic landmark, and were fascinated by the rich history of the ancient Arab – Portuguese war. They attentively listened (and sometimes scribbled in their notebooks) to the local tour guide, who took his time explaining the intriguing historical journey within the massive and crumbling walls.

Tree planting at Bamburi Nature Trails

In the afternoon, they explored Bamburi Nature Trail, taking advantage of a playing ground to indulge in fun and games before planting local tree seedlings at a secluded site aptly named Thua!

As they leave the beach later in the evening, the students are tired, but elated.
But most importantly, the trip has lit a spark in their hearts. Planting trees really pays!

Campus life is never without challenges, especially when you come from a humble background. Gone are the days of free meals at the mess, when senior comrades welcomed ‘freshers’ into the system.

Nowadays, the competition to join a university…any university, and complete the full course is a do-or-die affair, despite the current strained economic situation and a possible future with minimum employment prospects.

The temptation of taking loans from the Higher Education Loans Board might overwhelm students, but the excitement is always short-lived as the demands of re-payments spill over years into the young graduates’ lives.

But for the university students under the KenGen Education Scholarships, the story is different.

For David Kimanzi, a late evening phone call in early May 2014 from KenGen changed his life.

“Having just completed my form four exam at Makima Secondary School, I was at home assisting my parents when I received athephone call that has gone a long way in defining my education and perhaps even giving me chance to count my dreams as valid. It was good news that I had been awarded a scholarship due to my performance. My financial worries on how to get through university had been solved”, said David.

KenGen Chairman Joshua Choge awards David Kimanzi his scholarship certificate in 2015.

Following the upgrading of 15 constituent colleges in to fully-fledged universities in 2012, there was an influx of qualified students that stretched the available accommodation beyond the institutional limits.

“I joined Kisii University on September 2014 to undertake Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Finance. KenGen cleared my fees, but even then, life at campus was very challenging. For the first three semesters, I found myself having difficulties in paying rent and buying food. This was straining my family’s meager budget beyond their capability”, said David.

Noting that most of the KenGen Education Scholarships beneficiaries faced similar challenges, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees approved the disbursement of stipend for food and accommodation for all university students under the program.

The total sum per student is Ksh.50,000 per year, with Ksh. 25,000 transferred to their accounts at the beginning of the year. The funds are intended to enable all the students enjoy the full scholarship since most of them come from humble backgrounds.

“The stipend has really changed my life, making my campus experience enjoyable. I now live a financially stress free life at school”, said David.

“Following information I gained from the 2015 Annual Mentorship program, I choose to diversify my education and enrolled for a course in Certified Information Communication Technology under KASNEB”.

“I’m currently undertaking section 5 of the course, and the stipend has been financing the CICT exams fees, inclusive of the renewal fees, and purchase of relevant learning materials. Upon sitting for the section 1 and 2 exams, I emerged the best and was awarded a prize for this in a ceremony held at Hilton Hotel on 7th April”.

David’s story doesn’t end there. With a little extra finance at his disposal, David bought a printer and laptop and started a business as one of his 2017 resolutions.

“Apart from photocopying and printing at school, I also compile secondary school past papers into revision materials per subjects, and have transacted with a number of schools, and also individual parents and students. This has introduced me to some aspects of the corporate world, and helped me learn some business aspects”, he added.

“KenGen Foundation has been very supportive in my education and life in general. The stipend has been the solution to my financial growth, and educational advancement. The scholarship is indeed making my dreams achievable. Thank you KenGen, I’m forever grateful”.

Many of you just like me once wondered, even if I score good grades in my KCPE/KCSE, what hope do I have when what I need to go to the next level is not necessarily good grades but rather money. Fortunately, KenGen Scholarships programme has come up strongly and heeded to our cry. You and me now have the opportunity to realize our dreams”.

The KenGen Foundation has concluded this year’s secondary schools education scholarships selection with a final list of 31 needy students who will benefit from fully paid for opportunities to further their studies.

Working closely with the area CSR committees, liaison officers and the local administration under the Foundation supervision, rigorous background checks on the applicants was made to ascertain those who were awarded the scholarships were indeed deserving of the limited golden chance.

“Selecting the newest class of scholars is always an exciting time for the Foundation for we believe those chosen are leaders who will make a significant impact in their communities and the nation in the very near future” says Mike Njeru, Managing Trustee of KenGen Foundation adding that seeing the continued growth of the KenGen Scholarship program has been very rewarding towards advancing the Company’s vision.
