From Trees to Transformation: Kamutu Primary School Reaps the Rewards of Climate Leadership
A commitment to nurturing trees has delivered something even more enduring for Kamutu Primary School in Embu County—a renewed future for hundreds of learners. What began years ago as an environmental conservation effort under the KenGen Foundation’s Schools’ Green Initiative Challenge (GIC) has culminated in the complete rehabilitation of the school’s aging seven-classroom block, replacing unsafe, deteriorating facilities with modern learning spaces that restore confidence in education. The transformation demonstrates how sustained climate action can generate tangible social returns, turning environmental responsibility into improved educational opportunities for rural communities.
Kamutu Primary School secured the comprehensive renovation package after finishing second in Phase IV of the Schools’ Green Initiative Challenge, KenGen Foundation’s flagship programme that integrates afforestation, education and community development across Kenya’s semi-arid regions.
Supported by KenGen PLC through its corporate social responsibility initiatives, the project involved the full rehabilitation of a classroom block whose deteriorating condition had become a safety concern and contributed to declining enrolment.
By linking environmental performance with meaningful educational investment, the initiative illustrates how sustainability programmes can create long-term value that extends well beyond tree planting, strengthening schools while building resilience within the communities they serve.
“The difference these classrooms have made cannot be measured by new walls and roofs alone,” said Head Teacher **Mr. Benson Njagi**. “For a long time, our learners studied in facilities that were no longer safe and that discouraged many parents from bringing their children to this school. Today, our pupils are learning in an environment that reflects their potential and gives them every reason to dream bigger.

Kamutu’s success is rooted in years of environmental stewardship. Through the Green Initiative Challenge, learners have taken ownership of nurturing indigenous trees, becoming champions of conservation both within the school and in their surrounding communities. Their dedication has now translated into improved educational infrastructure, creating a lasting legacy that reaches beyond the classroom. During the renovation works, local residents were engaged as part of the construction workforce, ensuring that the project generated immediate livelihoods while delivering long-term educational benefits.
Since its launch in 2013, the Schools’ Green Initiative Challenge has engaged more than 900 schools, maintaining an average tree survival rate of 63 per cent and embedding environmental awareness across Kenya’s dryland counties. Kamutu Primary School now stands as a compelling example of how KenGen PLC continues to transform climate action into measurable social impact through investments that strengthen education, empower communities and advance sustainable development.
