The KenGen Foundation demonstrated yet another act of philanthropy on January 4 during a project site visit with the Foundation’s Managing Trustee Mr. Anthony Igecha and staff Givers from Kipevu Power Station at Amani Primary School in Mombasa County. The team expressed their satisfaction at the recent construction and refurbishment of the school’s ablution block.

The well performing public school, which has a population of approximately 2,000 pupils faces a myriad of challenges specifically in water and sanitation as it lacked enough toilets

The school’s principal, Ali Abdullah commended KenGen Foundation for the construction of the ablution block, saying that it will resolve most of the sanitation issues the institution faces. The school previously only had eight toilets, which for most part weren’t adequate for the school’s population.

The renovation of the ablution block is crucial in curbing the spread of water borne diseases. Frequent and proper hand hygiene is one of the most important measures that can be used to prevent infection. The additional seven units will go a long way in alleviating the hygiene conditions.

KenGen Foundation established the Employee Giver Initiative in 2015 as a platform for KenGen staff to be involved and contribute to the company’s CSI activities. So far, over 1,000 staff members from KenGen power plants have subscribed to the initiative.

The rehabilitation of the ablution block is part of a series of planned Corporate Social Investment activities aimed at addressing social issues through contributions made to the Employee Giver Initiative by KenGen staff.
